Last Wednesday (December 3rd) our under-16.5’s beat Chríost Rí 2-15 to 2-10 to be crowned Munster College’s Champions!
The match was held in Church Road, where our lads came out on top after a tense contest between the sides. We took an early lead through two frees from Matthew McAuliffe. After 8 minutes Rochestown were three points up through a Jack McCarthy score. This was short lived however as Chríost Rí’s John McCarthy found the back of the net. The dominating Seán O’Callaghan set up another Matthew McAuliffe score to retain the lead, before James Holland increased the gap with another point. Seán O’Callaghan forced an excellent save from the Chríost Rí ‘keeper who also denied Cormac Kiely’s follow up. Not long after, Rochestown took a firm control over the game. O’Callghan dominated the midfield battle and scored two quick points. Then came a defining moment in the match. O’Callaghan collected the ball from James Holland before ripping the net with an unstoppable shot leaving the ‘keeper stranded without a chance. Chríost Rí rallied but a score from Holaand ensured that we went in ahead by five points at the interval.
Rochestown came out on top at the start of the second half despite the in form Leahy in the Chríost Rí goal. John O’Sullivan was on hand to slot over two 65s. Brian Turnbull and James Holland slotted over points to extend the lead to 1-12 to 1-3. But Chríost Rí were not going to settle for a loss, they rallied with points in sharp succession. Defeat, however, seemed inevitable. Points from McCarthy and O’Sullivan, a free from McAuliffe and a late goal from Liam Grainger secured the victory. Chríost Rí scored a late goal, but it proved to be little more than a consolation.
Our scorers to inspire victory were:
Matthew McAuliffe, Jack McCarty, James Holland, John O’Sullivan, Brian Turnbull, Liam Grainger and Seán O’Callaghan.
